World Environment Day: Planting tree and its benefits

by Ritik Raj 20 Apr 2024 0 Comments

Everyday we see our environment and nature’s condition worsening, water and air becoming polluted, forests and trees decreasing. All of these are the result of our actions. To minimize these issues, the world together celebrates World Environment Day on 5th June. This is an effort to limit our impact on nature and to protect it. And, what better way to protect nature than planting some trees and plants- the gift of nature? Planting trees offers a list of benefits, which we are going to discuss here.

Balance the Carbon Dioxide in the air: Plants are a great way to improve oxygen in the air and lessen the carbon dioxide. Through photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide from the surroundings around them and convert it into oxygen. Which is then released into the air, improving its quality. It also helps to mitigate climate change by reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Improves Soil Condition: Plants and trees, especially bigger trees, have roots that hold the soil together and prevent soil erosion. Trees also contribute to soil fertility by adding organic matter as leaves and other plant materials decompose. When the soil is good, healthy, and fertile, it breathes life into the habitat of our planet and environment.

Promotes Biodiversity: A majority part of the world is dependent on the greens for living. Trees and plants provide habitats and food sources for various organisms like animals and humans. From grains to fruits and from vegetables to medicinal herbs, it offers all, providing substance and promoting biodiversity. A diverse ecosystem is more resilient to environmental disturbances and better able to adapt to changes.

Helps to Regulate Water: Water is one of the most important things that we all need and plants are important for making sure water moves around the planet correctly. Trees, for example, take in water from the ground and then release it into the air through their leaves. This process is called transpiration. It helps to keep the air damp and helps control how much rain falls in different places, which affects the weather in those areas. So, plants, especially trees, help to keep the water cycle balanced and local climates stable.

Air Quality Improvement: As much as plants help to maintain soil and water, they also help to improve air quality. Trees and plants absorb pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter from the air. Acting as natural filters, trees trap harmful substances and release clean oxygen.
